Basic Ayurvedic Concept: Doshas
From the perspective of Ayurveda, the human body and all of its functions are governed by subtle, mind-body principles called the doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Vata has the characteristics of air and space, and it’s responsible for movement; Pitta has the characteristics of water and fire and is responsible for digestion and metabolism; and Kapha has the characteristics of earth and water and is responsible for structure and lubrication. Each of us is a varying and unique combination of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Your dosha makeup, or prakriti, determines everything from the shape of your body to the way your mind, emotions, and body functions. It is your underlying, unique nature. Understanding your prakriti is enjoyable, as it gives you insights into who you are and why you respond individually to the world around you.
Your dosha state of balance or imbalance at any time is known as vikriti. Vikriti is a snapshot of who you are at the time that you take the Dosha Quiz. It may not vary much from your prakriti, but it will tell you where to put your attention. You can take this quiz to determine both your prakriti and vikriti—and then use Ayurvedic diet, routine, lifestyle tips and products to gently bring yourself back to balance.
